I bet you all want to know if marriage was just so blissful as those movies make it to be and honestly it was for me. Don’t get me wrong it was not perfect and there was a lot of adjusting to living with each other but it was truly blissful to start a new life with my best friend and love of my life.
I wanted to share with you the 5 things that I learned from my first year of marriage that I think are vital to thriving on your first year.
- Wake up and be ready to serve. Everyday all the time.
When people ask me for one advice I would give to someone who is getting ready it would be this. As a young wife I am always praying that I have a heart of service. There will be days that you are tired and you want to be selfish but its important to always be willing to serve your husband - UNSPOKEN RULES will get the best of both of you. A lot of people don’t realize that you are living with someone who has so many different ways of doing things and life in general. So being patient in the process of learning these unspoken rules is key!
- HAVE FUN, honestly I feel this is not said enough. Though this is a time of change and a whole new process having fun is key to enjoying and surviving your first year. Make sure you plan fun road trips, date nights and enjoy your time as newly weds.
- GET YOUR FINANCES STRAIGHT, This one got us so bad. My husband had debt of his own and when we married it became my debt as well. So we decided we needed to tackle debt from the start and make sure we where good stewards of our money.
- But above all of these tips the number one advice I could give you is to honor God through your marriage. Having God as your foundation is important for you to not only survive but thrive in your marriage. Ecclesiastes 4:12 states “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken”.
So there you have it, the five top things that I feel made me enjoy my first year of marriage and created such a strong foundation for the years to come.
